Moisture penetrationcharacteristics Tvith prehumidification moisture to penetrate without the in-terference of air. In most cases mate-rials will be thoroughly humidifiedafter holding the vacuum for 15-30minutes. In extreme cases, where parti-cularly dry materials are present, eventhis application may not provide com-plete penetration by the water such circumstances the incom-ing gas tends to drive the water vaporahead of it into the central portionsof the packages thereby completing thehumidification process. Figure 4 showsthe response of a humidity sensingelement placed in the central portionsof a very dry package. It will be notedthat relative humidity rises slowly un-til the admission of gas into the cham-ber, at which time there is an abruptrise in relative humidity in the centreof the package followed by a gradualdrop toward the pre-set humidity level. Limitations There are limitations within thesystem. It must be remembered thatethylene oxide is a chemical.
