He settled at Bergen, now a part of New Banta was one of the fifth generation and was grand-father to Jacob Banta, the subject of our sketch. The latterwas born in Hackensack, N. Hebecame a prosperous citizen, living to be 00 years of died Feb. 26, 1861. His sons, Cornelius D., David andAlbert became prominent members of the rapidly growingcommunity. Cornelius took up land near Metamora, as didalso Albert. Among the most prominent members of theBanta family was Jacob Banta, an early settler of Roanoke,and later resident of Eureka. His son, Dr. C. George Ray came to Illinois from Ohio in 1836 andsoon came to Metamora, where he resided al the lime of hisdeath. He engaged in the cattle trade quite extensively intin1 early years of his life here. He soon became a prominenifigure in the county and in 1850 was elected sheriff and in185-4 was again elected to that office. He was the father ofJacob Ray, who has been connected with the political lifeof the county for many years. In 1882 the latter was electedcounty clerk. Welcome P. Brown came to Illinois from New Yorkabout 1833. lie first settled in Bloomington after visitingseveral other points. He finally came to Woodford countyand was chosen the first county judge in 1849.
