Canoers from the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club paddle the polluted Gowanus Canal in New YorK
Canoers from the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club paddle the polluted inland waterway, the Gowanus Canal, Friday, October 9, 2009. New York City has announced a $150 million project to improve the water quality in the canal. The existing pump station and flushing tunnel will be rehabilitated and sediment will be dredged from the upper section of the canal. The pumping and tunnel work will increase the flow of oxygen rich water into the canal to eliminate odors and improve the quality of life of those around the waterway. (© Richard B. Levine)
