Amanda Smith, the famous coloredevangelist, and for many years a mis-sionary in Africa and India, and founder. of the Amanda Smith Home at Harvey,Illinois, died last month in Sebring, Flor-ida. Funeral services were held at theOrphanage in Harvey, where AnothersPrayer was sung by the colored chil-dren. The Orphanage was founded byMrs. Smith with contributions she hadgathered in the course of her missionarywork. Mrs. Smiths mother was born inslavery. Her father, after purchasinghis wifes freedom, bought Amanda andthree other children. Later the familymoved to Pennsylvania. Amanda passedonly three months in school, but hernatural gifts enabled her to thrill evencultivated audiences. Thousands of con-versions are credited to her powers.
