Nathaniel Fiennes (1608 - 1669), Member of the English Parliament for Banbury in Oxfordshire and a Puritan who fought for Parliament in the English Civil War. He was condemned to death in 1643 for surrendering Bristol to the King's nephew, Prince Rupert, but exonerated by Oliver Cromwell and other Parliamentary generals. This engraving was first used in a verse history of the English Civil Wars by Edward Ward (1667 - 1731), 'History of the Grand Rebellion’ published in 1713. The engraving was then re-used, with plate number added, in later editions of the 'History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England' by Edward Hyde, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to King Charles I, who was later raised to the peerage as 1st Earl of Clarendon. Nathaniel Fiennes was the second son of the wily William Fiennes, 1st Viscount Saye and Sele. Nathaniel entered Parliament as MP for Banbury in Oxfordshire and took up arms for Parliament immediately the first English Civil War broke out in 1642. Although he fought bravely at battles such Edgehill, he was condemned to death in 1643 for surrendering Bristol to the King's nephew, Prince Rupert. He was exonerated by Oliver Cromwell and other Parliamentary generals, but went abroad until 1647. In the 1650s, Fiennes held official positions under Cromwell and returned to the House of Commons, once again representing Banbury. Michael van der Gucht was born in Antwerp and came to London in about 1690 where he was largely employed in engraving title pages and portraits for booksellers.
