In August 1944, after reaching the east bank of Vistula, Polish 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division temporarily halted its operations to allow the Germans to quell the Warsaw uprising. Some soldiers of the Division tried to cross the river to help the Warsaw insurgents, but were killed by Soviet soldiers with machineguns while crossing the river. (source: Wikipedia)
