WWI - French Dragoons near the front. They were considered one of the finest cavalry units of their time. Dragoons originally were a class of mounted infantry, who dismounted from their horses to fight on foot. From the early 17th century dragoons were employed as conventional cavalry and trained for combat with swords or spears and firearms whilst still on horseback . The name dragoon is derived from a type of firearm, called a dragon, which was a handgun version of a blunderbuss. The modern French Army retains three dragoon regiments of the original 32 of WWI.
