A view from the tiny remote village of Gigors of the old Romanesque church of St Peter and the mountainous landscape of the Vercors. La Drôme, France.
The old Romanesque church, L’eglise de Saint Piérre, nestling among the trees on a steep hillside, overlooks the fertile valley of the river Gervanne. The church serves two tiny communities, so small and remote that they need to be combined together to add up to a whole village. Marked on the map as Gigors-et-Lozeron, they are several miles apart by road and perched on the sides of two different hills. The rugged mountainous countryside is part of the remote Vercors, a massif of mountains and plateaux in the Rhône-Alpes region of Vercors massif and it’s surrounding areas are protected as a regional park, which was officially designated in 1970. The park is important for the protection and conservation of the distinctive mountain environment with its alpine wildlife. At the same time these priorities must be reconciled with agriculture, tourism and the needs of the local human population. The Vercors is particularly good for a wide variety of outdoor leisure pursuits, such as hiking, camping, cycling, climbing and caving.
