Along the Union line at the famous Angle were the batteries of Cowan, Cushing, Brown and the artillery duel which preceded Picketts charge their position was perilous. The fire of 150 guns from the Confederate side was centered ontheir position, and for nearly two hours the air was full of bursting shell and whizzing fragments. Caissons were exploding and the earth shook underthe mighty concussions. They remained in their positions and played a prominent part in the repulse of the infantry charge that followed. Thebronze plate of Cowans represents a battery in action, and below is the legend: Double canister at ten NEW YORK MONUMENTS. Seven of the monuments on this page show the sunburst, the badge of the Cavalry Corps. They comprisedNew Yorks representation in that branch of the service. The Fifth was part of Farnsworths Brigade of Kilpatricks division, and on the 30th of June,1863, took part in the battle in the streets of Hanover with Stuarts Cavalry, which had the effect of sending Stuart northward by way of Car-lisle, and prevented him from joining Lees army at Gettysburg until the evening of July 2d.
