The extraordinary instinct displayed by birds inthe building of their nests, has long attracted thenotice, not only of naturalists, but even of the mostcareless observers. If we examine them simplyas an illustration of the skill and industry of theiringenious and interesting architects, our labour willnot be lost; but considering the different forms inwhich they are constructed, with reference to thenecessities of their inhabitants, we perceive at oncethe beautiful design and regularity displayed in Bottle Tit and Nest. The nest of the long-tailed tit, the bottle-tit asit is called, is somewhat in the shape of an egg; theinside is lined with feathers, and it has but a smallopening at the top ; one feather is always foundcovering this entrance, and placed in a slanting direc-tion, so as to carry off the rain, and prevent its enter-ing the nest; if the finger is introduced into this hole,it will be found that other feathers cross each other invarious directions, all placed there with the sameintent. If the nest is built in an old black-thorn inblossom, as was the case with the one represented inthe cut, the outer part of it is found covered withsmall pieces of light-coloured moss, and other sub-stances, so exactly agreeing in colour with the barkof the tree in which it was placed, that it could withdilFiculty be discovered. If the colour of the tree hadbeen grcon, the moss selected for the covering of the, nest would have been green also. In India, the birds
