Pen-dleton. In 1865 he was appointed to fill a vacancyon the bench of the Superior Court of Cincinnati,and was twice elected to that office by popular vote,holding the seat until 1872, when he resigned toengage in practice in partnership with two of hissons, Charles Phelps Taft (Yale 1864) and PeterRawson Taft (Yale 1867). In 1875 he was thecandidate for the nomination of the Republicanparty for Governor of Ohio, but failed by reason ofthe prejudice created by an opinion delivered whileon the bench on the question of the use of the. .ALPHONSO TAFT Bible in the public schools,— an opinion whichwas unanimously affirmed by the Supreme Courtof Ohio and is now the law of the state. On theresignation of General Belknap as Secretary of Warin consequence of the post-tradeship scandals in1876, President Grant summoned Judge Taft totake that seat in his Cabinet, subsequently transfer-ring him to the Attorney-Generalship, which he heldthrough the remainder of the Grant 18S2, Judge Taft was appointed United StatesMinister to Austria, and in 1884 was transferred inthe same capacity to St. Petersburg, where he re-mained until 1885. The degree of Doctor of Lawswas conferred upon him by Yale in 1867. JudgeTaft was twice married: first, August 21, 1841, to UNIVERSITIES AND THEIR SONS 217 Fanny, daughter of Charles Phelps, of Towns
