Ebola virus replication. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of replicating Ebola virus particles. This filovirus, which causes Ebola fever, replicates inside the host's cells, forming a spindle (centre left) from which new particles are released. Ebola is contracted by handling material from infected animals, or through contact with the blood or other body fluids of infected patients. It causes a fever, severe haemorrhaging and central nervous system damage. There is no cure, but most victims recover if given excellent supportive therapy. Magnification unknown.
