Blood sugar testing. Elderly woman having her finger pricked by a healthcare worker to test her blood sugar levels using a glucometer (not seen). Diabetics have to perform this test regularly. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the body does not produce sufficient quantities of the hormone insulin, causing sugars (such as glucose) to accumulate in the blood and urine. Monitoring of blood glucose levels allows diabetics to control the disease through diet or medication such as insulin injections.
