SPALDINGS ATHLETIC LIBRARY. 31 weeks of jogging and pumping knee work to get in fair con-dition the athlete should practice starts and shorter sprints thanhis special distance on one day, and longer jogs and fast runsover a greater distance the next day. After a while the timefor those distances should be diminished and yet the athleteshould not feel more distress than formerly. Distance running up to two miles may be trained for bydoing much cross-country work, running and brisk knee work and plenty of jogging will develop andstrengthen the stride. The same principles of speed and staywork apply here. In the 440 yards, the 880 yards, the mile andtwo miles, the athlete must learn to judge pace. H
