An estimated 50,000 people descended on Manchester city centre, where this year's Conservative Party Conference was held, to demonstrate against the possibility of the privitisation of the National Health Service, as well as a number of other issues including the culling of Badgers, fracking and changes to housing benefit. The march was called by the TUC. Labour MPs Andy Burnham and Steve Rotherham, Unison leader Dave Prentis and Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh joined the march. Greater Manchester Police said that the demonstration was the largest it had ever policed.
