Jefferson Davis (house here) was the president of the Confederacy from 1861-1865, the time of the Civil

Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederacy from 1861-1865, the time of the Civil War. This view of his house on his estate, which was situated south of Vicksburg, Virginia, is from a photograph taken by Joslyn of Vicksburg. When the photo was taken, the front of the house over the colonnade had the words, in large black letters, "The House Jeff. Built." By 1862, Union troops had taken control of both the mansion and the plantation.
