Mou Waho Island on Lake Wanaka, South Island, New Zealand. Curiously the island has its own freshwater lake - Arethusa island has been granted special protection status by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and cleared of introduced pests making it "safe" for native species to live and breed. It can only be accessed by boat, adding to its safety as there are noscheduled services. Casual visitors need to arrive by water taxi or with a tour group such as Eco Wanaka Adventures. The latter do a great deal for conservation on the island, planting native trees and shrubs. The island is home to the Weta, Buff Weka ( extinct on the mainland) and Southern Alp Geckos. The latter, being easy prey for Weka have been built special safe "motels" by local students.
