Itsi now the chief city on the line of the Trans-Continental divisionof the Missouri Pacific railway, while charters have been grantedfor several other lines to and through it, in different directions,constituting a branch of the St. Louis and San Francisco railroadthrough the Indian territory; the northern branch of the Houstonand Texas Central railway, from Garrett in Ellis county; and abranch of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe, from Dallas.; all ofwhich will, in all probability, be completed within the coming twoyears, when, if not the leading railroad city of the state, Paris will,at least, be entitled to rank as the great railroad city of NorthTexas. PARIS, AND LAMAR COUNTY. 33 LAMAR iRECTLY south of the beautifulbut uncultivated Indian terri-tory, in the northern tier ofcounties, separated therefromby the Red river, is the countyof Lamar, named in honor ofMirabeau B. Lamar, secondpresident of the Republic ofTexas. It is the third countyfrom the eastern boundary ofthe state and joined on the(Vwest by Fannin, on the south byDelta and on the east by Redriver counties ; located on the meridian of 95 degrees, 40 m3a-sute west longitude. Its general altitude is 600 feet abovethe sea level and the surface elevated in the center andgently undulating, with a perceptible declination southwardto North Sulphur Fork and northward to Red river. Thek divide, between the main Red river and the North SulphurFork, extends nearly eastward^and westward through the county,
