American Navy Lieutenant James B. Back, who served as an assistant surgeon to the First Battalion, First Marines, experiences his first combat encounter during the Vietnam War. While assisting ARVN units during a sweep, Lt. Back conducts an informal medical examination, referred to as a "Hedcap", on a young Vietnamese girl who was wounded earlier.
