View S into the massive ditch (originally up to 29m wide & 6m deep) defending the SE town walls of Roman Verulamium, St Albans, England, UK. The first Roman settlement was founded here c AD49 at a crossing of the river Vere just NE of the tribal capital of the Catuvellauni. In the C3rdAD Verulamium had become the third largest Romano-British town: some 200 acres within stone walls 5m high, plus walkway & parapet, built AD265-70. External bastions were added in the C4th.
