Richard, the Pearly Pride of Hackney outside "The Carpenters Arms" pub on Cambridge Heath Road, where the largest crowning of Pearly Kings and Queens in 100 years took place on 6th May 2012 . Pearly Kings and Queens are famous for their iconic suits with hundreds of buttons hand-sewn onto them. These are worn to raise money for charity, a tradition started by Henry Croft, and East End costermonger, born 150 years ago. Originally born in a work-house, Croft spent a lifetime helping the poor.
