A monument of 1900 standing south of the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta at Bolzano, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. The monument depicts and commemorates the capture and subsequent execution, in February 1810, of Tyrolean patriot Peter Mayr (), among the leaders of an armed uprising against French and Bavarian rule which temporarily liberated his homeland.

Bolzano, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: monument to Tyrolean patriot Peter Mayr, head of the Schützen, a traditional unit of infantrymen and firm believer in rebellion against French domination. He was shot by the French on 20th Feburary 1810. Bolzano dates back to construction of the Via dei Portici (Street of Porticoes) in around 1170 by the Prince-Bishops of Trento who wanted to create a trading centre in the Bolzano basin. Today, Via dei Portici, with its Gothic arcades, is a major and much-visited shopping street at the heart of Bolzano. From the Middle Ages onwards, Bolzano’s position as an important hub for trade grew. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from the late 1300s to 1919, except for a short period (1805 - 1813) when it came under French-Bavarian rule. The town’s international importance began to weaken in the 1700s and the town descended into chaos during the two World Wars. When South Tyrol was ceded from Austria to Italy in 1919, Italianization began and Bolzano expanded significantly. Bolzano became the capital of the province of South Tyrol in 1927.
