. The Street railway journal . ot well will be within 1 deg. F. of that corre-sponding to the pressure measured in the condenser. All partsof the machinery have been designed to operate smoothly andquietly under all loads up to 50 per cent above the normally citer storage battery consisting of seventy-four cells, type R-21,having a capacity of 1200 amps, for one hour, with spare spacein the tanks for increasing the capacity to 1800 amps, for onehour. The exciter generators and battery are connected to twoindependent positive busses and one common negative battery has two end cell switches on the positive side. Onepositive bus serves for field excitation of the 5000-kw genera-tors only, while the other serves for certain lights and motorsin the station. OPERATING GALLERY The stations will be operated from the operating gallery onthe north side of the turbine room. The arrangement of theswitchboards in this gallery is symmetrical, and all cables andcopper connections running to the switchboards are carried in. CROSS-SECTION OF A TYPICAL SUB-STATION ON THE ELECTRIFIED DIVISION OF THE NEW YORK CENTRAL & HUDSON RIVER RAILROAD rated capacity of the turbines. The intake and discharge cir-culating tunnels for the condensing system are elliptic in shape,7 ft. t>7A >ns- x 9 ft. 11 ins. GENERATORSThe generators each have a capacity of 5000 kw, and arewound for three-phase current of 25 cycles and 11,000 voltspressure. The armatures are star-connected, and the neutralsare grounded through individual cast-iron grid resistances con-nected to a common ground bus, limiting the ground currentto an amount sufficient to operate the line overload relays. Theleads of the generators are brought down to the floor throughbrass pipes to the ducts leading to the high-tension switches, the arrangement being such that no high-tension conductorsare exposed in the turbine room. EXCITERSThe exciter system at each power station will consist of two150-kw turbo-generators and one 150-kw
