Respiration determination apparatus, 1940s. Researcher carrying out an experiment using the respiration determination apparatus developed by German physiologist Otto Warburg (1883-1970). Warburg worked on the respiration of cells and was awarded the 1931 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work in this area. The apparatus named for him is a manometric respirometer that measures oxygen consumption by tissue samples. This apparatus was used for many years in biochemistry laboratories. Photographed in 1949 at the Rocky Mountain Laboratory, Hamilton, Montana, USA.
