Heterotrophic, toxic, dinophysoid dinoflagellate Phalacroma rotundatum (also known as Dinophysis rotundata), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SE

Heterotrophic, toxic, dinophysoid dinoflagellate Phalacroma rotundatum (also known as Dinophysis rotundata), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). It is a toxic heterotrophic dinoflagellate species widely distributed in cold and warm waters. Phalacroma rotundatumis a thecate (armoured), marine planktonic, heterotrophic (non-photosynthetic) dinoflagellate. Unlike photosynthetic dinoflagellates (true algae), heterotrophic dinoflagellates (protists, protozoans) feed directly on other marine plankton. D. rotundata is a phagocytic species feeding on both aloricate and loricate ciliates by piercing the prey cell with a feeding tube. D. rotundata is a causative organism of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). Magnification: x480 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
