Anaesthesia. Line being placed into the wrist of a patient to administer anaesthetic liquid prior to an operation. A cannula (in hand at centre left), a hollow blunt tube, is being inserted into the wrist. A tube, which will carry the drug, will be put in the cannula. Anaesthetics induce unconsciousness and so prevent the patient feeling any pain or discomfort during an operation.
