Ermine moth eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a compound eye from an ermine moth (Yponomeuta sp.). The eye consists of many lenses (hexagonal) known as ommatidia. Each ommatidium is a simple eye that sends a signal to the moth's brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification: x4,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
