. The street railway review . n series with the brushes onthe direct current side of the rotary which is being started. The next six panels are the direct current machine panels, threeof which are now equipped. That panel controlling the l, has an 1-T-E circuit with a reverse-current relayattachment and alarm-bell contacts. Under this are a Weston am-meter, a Thompson recording wattmeter, main switches for couect-ing the rotary with cither one of two bus-bars, a 4-point tield switch, the points in their order being ofT, discharge, separately ex-cited and self excited. On the bottom of the panel are the fieldresistance switch and a single-pole, double-throw starting switchin series with the resistance controlled by the switch on the start-ing panel. The other two machine panels are similar to the one justdescribed, except that the circuit breakers and instruments are de-signed for the 500-kw. rotaries with which they are are six direct current feeder panels each arranged for cou-. SWITCHEO.\RD, GLENSIDE switches by specially designed copper lugs. The contact areas ofthese connections were calculated for a current density of 100 am-peres per sq. in. from copper to copper and 50 amperes per sq. copper to aluminum. The large negative bus shown in theforeground is made up of eight bars of aluminum 5 x Ji in. insection. This bus stands upon the basement floor. At its base areconnected the four i,ooo,coo-c. m. bare copper cables which jointhe switchboard with the track. The positive feeders Jre of thecompanys standard type and after passing through the hole in thefloor back of the board are carried on a steel cable rack to the en-trance of the underground feeder ducts which parallel tlie telephone cable which is of the standard lead covered type isalso brought into the sub-station in one of these underground con-duits and has its pairs distributed on a terminal board mounted onthe foundation wall directly
