This led to a delay of a coupleof hours, and as it had been stated that the rush-cartwould be drawn out about three oclock, and as muchremained to be clone, everv hand that could be foundroom for was set to work. Trestles were placed, andwhilst one man pared the face of the rushes smoothand into shape with a scythe blade, others were makingfresh blades as sharp as a razor, for the toughness anddensity of the rushes took the edge off the blades veryquickly. Another was trimming theedges, or feathering, with a pair of shears, whilstthe front of the cart was being embellished with thesheet. This was a piece of bleached calico, cut to theshape of the front of the cart, and was ornamented witha border of red and blue braid, crossed diagonally, andin the diamonds thus formed were fastened artificialflowers. At the bottom of the sheet was a large rosetteof silver and gold tinsel and blue ribbon, above whichwas a large crown in silver. This was surmounted bythe figures 1890, in white, on a black ground.
