LACRIMAL APPARATUS, DRAWING

The lacrymal apparatus secretes tears and consists of two glands. One gland is responsible for reflex lacrimation (tears). Tears are produced in response to an irritant or a strong emotion. The second gland produces basal tears, the lacrymal secretion which serves to lubricate and nourish the cornea. The secretory apparatus is made up of small orifices (lacrymal ducts) located on the inner edge of the eyelid which are linked by the lacrimal caniliculi to the lacrymal sac which is located in the inside corner of the eyelid and connected to the nasal cavity.
