William Gazzam, was a prom-inent physician and lawyer, in-fluential in Pennsylvania poli-tics. He assisted Salmon and others to found theFree-Soil party at the Buffaloconvention in 1848, was its firstcandidate for governor of Penn-sylvania, and in 1856 was electedto the state senate. His mother,Elizabeth Antoinette Gazzam,was a daughter of ConstantineAutoine de Beelen (de Berthoil)and granddaughter in male descent of Baron Antoinede Beelen de Berthoff, Austrian minister to theUnited States in 1783-87.
