The whole extent of com-pleted railroad in the State on the 1st January, 1853, was 624miles, and about 800 miles more were in course of canals of Virginia are—the James river and KanawhaCanal, the Dismal Swamp Canal, and the Alexandria Baltimore and Ohio Canal, though in Maryland, is to allintents and purposes, as much a canal of Virginia as of thatState, being only separated from it by the channel of the Poto-mac river.
