They brought with them all the habits and customs of thefatherland, its religion and its amusements, and, taken alto-gether, might be considered a prosperous and happy Pequea settlement was early considered the most thrifty inthe colony, and Governor Pownell, who traveled there in 1754,said it reminded him of the best cultivated portions of even practiced irrigation, a custom which they had broughtwith them from Switzerland, but which has long since beenabandoned.
