Mattaponi26/021402 -- Spawning Shad caught in the drift nets by the Mattaponi Indians are packed in ice. The Mattponi have a annual Easter Sunday sunrise feast of foods from the river and wetlands on the reservation. Ancestors of the modern-day Mattaponi fished the same waters for thousands of years. The upper Mattaponi is spawning ground for shad and herring in the spring. The females burrow bowl-shaped holes in the sand and lay their eggs; later the males fertilize the eggs.
