Onchocerciasis blindness in Mali. Man blinded by onchocerciasis ('river blindness') being led by a small boy who may already have the disease himself. This disease is caused by a parasitic worm that is spread by flies that breed in and around rivers and other wetland areas. It is the microscopic filarial stage (microfilariae) produced by this parasitic worm that blinds people.
