In a tradition going back many years, a Swedish girl wearing a crown of lights representing Saint Lucia (Lucy/Lucia) visits the mountain villige of Santa Lucia on Gran Canaria on 13th, December (Saint Lucy`s day) when villagers pay homage to their patron saint (Santa Lucia). Although different to celebrations in catholic countries, Saint Lucy`s Day is widely celebrated in Scandanavian countries. The winter solstice was December 13 by the Julian calendar.
