It is not practicable togive cutting speeds for steel, because the hardness ofthe steel varies so much with the treatment it receivesprevious to machining. The maximum dimensions of work that can be handledin this lathe are 12 in. in diameter and 6 in. in of the machine is entirely automatic. All theoperator has to do is to chuck and remove the work andto start the lathe after a piece is chucked. The regularequipment provides for eleven changes of speed, from25 to 135 The feeds for the cutting tools are con-trolled by cams mounted on a large cam drum.
