Brandeis and Loeb. US judge Louis Dembitz Brandeis (left, 1856-1941) and German-US physiologist Jacques Loeb (right, 1859-1924). Brandeis was an associate justice on the US Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939. Loeb carried out experiments on marine invertebrates, achieving artificial parthenogenesis of sea urchin eggs where chemical modification prompted development without fertilisation by sperm cells. He conducted these experiments at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. Brandeis was among those to whom Loeb wrote about his philosophical and scientific ideas.
