A heat pump at the Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth

The Centre for Alternative Technology says that a heat pump is a “heat concentrator”. It takes dilute (low temperature) heat energy from the air, ground or water, and delivers it as more concentrated (higher temperature) heat. Heat pumps like the one in the photo need electricity. For every unit of electricity used they can deliver 2-4 units of heat. They are most efficient when the difference in temperature between the heat source and the heat supplied is small. In Zero Carbon Britain, heat pumps are a great way to turn renewable electricity into heat.
