The otori gate which welcomes visitors to Miyajima, Japan.

The Otori gate at Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan was built to appear as if it were floating in the ocean to illustrate the idea that it exists in a liminal state between the sacred and the profane. Commoners once were required to steer through the gates upon approach of the island. The original Otori gate was constructed in 1168, but the current one dates from 1875.
