Sealed fissure in tooth. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the pit of a molar tooth showing a fissure that has been treated with sealant (brown). This is a preventative treatment to stop the fissures from developing into dental caries. The molars are broad ridged teeth found at the back of the jaws of mammals. This is the crown, the visible part of the tooth. It is covered in enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. It is composed of rows of calcium and phosphorous salts embedded in a protein matrix. Magnification: x45when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
