White sky sunny day oblique portrait Gun Street, looking south from Brushfield Street, Spitalfields, London, E1, UK

The place names Gun Street and the nearby Artillery Passage and Lane recall the Artillery Ground founded in 1538, by Henry V111, in the outer precinct of the Priory and Hospital of St Mary Spital. The Artillery Ground was for the use of 'The Fraternity or Guild of Artillery of Longbows, Crossbows and Handguns'. This group moved in 1658 and in 1682 the Artillery Ground was sold off to builders, the area being developed for housing and the streets taking on their present names. The weathered wood facade and green awnings of Verde and Company gourmet food emporium stands at the corner of Gun Street and Brushfield Street.
