Origin of life. Computer artwork of molecules of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) seen over the dark side of a planet such as Earth. DNA molecules enabled life to originate and evolve on Earth. DNA carries the genetic code, and is responsible for the passing on of hereditary characteristics in genes. Here, the DNA is represented as coloured balls (nucleotide bases) which make up the genetic code, linked by spiral strands making up the sugar-phosphate backbone. It is thought that DNA evolved on Earth in an early sea called the \primitive soup\". From this stage early cells such as primitive bacteria could evolve in a process that began some 3,500-4000 million years ago."
