Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the front pair of legs of a flat mite (Brevipalpus yothersi). The tenant hairs (white) secrete adhesive fluid which enables the mite to walk on smooth surfaces. The pink projections are modified setae (hair-like structures). This is one of several mite species that carry citrus leprosis (CL) disease. This is an economically important viral disease which affects citrus crops. It reduces harvest of citrus fruit and can kill citrus trees.
