Sorrelsykes Follies of England _Stone-built round circular Tower, West Burton, Bishopdale, North Yorkshire, UK
Three stone built follies survive in the grounds of Sorrelsykes Park Hall. The ‘Pepper Pot’ and the ‘Rocket Ship’ date to the first half of the 19th century but little else is known about them. Their modern names refer to their shapes. The other surviving folly is a small arch or gateway set on the edge of a limestone outcrop. A fourth folly, a sham facade of a chapel with a blank gothic arch and an oeil de boeuf window, fell down in a storm in 1992. Follies were built as ornamental features in the parklands of grand country houses. The term ‘folly’ refers to the fact that they had no useful function.
