Gustav Froment (1815-1865). 1867 illustration of the French electrical engineer Pierre-Gustav Froment. Froment pioneered the design of electric motors capable of providing the motive power for machinery and for other industrial purposes. Though at this stage electric motors were relatively inefficient, they were an important technological development, offering a possible alternative to the steam, wind and water power sources of the nineteenth century.
