North-west Red-faced turtle (Emydura australis) submerged in a billabong at Mt Elizabeth, Gibb River Road, Kimberley

Whether E. australis is a seperate species to E. victoriae (Northern Red-Faced or Victoria River Turtle) or just a local variant is under debate. E. victoriae is found across the border in the Northern Territory while E. australis (or variant) is found in the northern rivers and pools of the East Kimberly in Western Australia.
