Tobacco was the main cash crop for much of Eastern NC in the 1960's. The flu-cured tobacco required that after picking the leaves be strung on poles and put inside a tobacco barn, where the leaves were slowly heated and dried. The leaves turn from green to a golden brown, and ready for auction. Families worked together to do this tedious work, which was their main source of income for the year.
