a Kermode or spirit bear (Ursus americanus kermodei) pauses as it eats barnacles exposed by low tide at the Pacific Ocean's edge in British Columbia

This Kermode bear is a white variant of a black bear caused by the pairing of two recessive genes. She feeds regularly on the barnacles exposed by the low tide, seen by the white patches around her. This coastal area of BC is currently in the news with concerns about oil tankers navigating dangerous passages en route to China.
