Serval (Felis serval) sitting in grasses. A fully- grown serval has a body length of up to 95 centimetres and a body weight of up to 18 kilograms. This cat is found in Africa south of the Sahara and in parts of northern Africa. It is a nocturnal carnivore that thrives in open savannah, swamps and by the shores of lakes. It preys on rodents, lizards and amphibians on the ground and can climb trees to hunt birds. The serval adapts well to places inhabited by humans and can be a threat to farmyard poultry. Because of this, and also because of the value of its spotted coat, it is hunted a great deal.
